A civilian fire death occurs every 143 minutes in the US.  But fire deaths due to toxic gases or oxygen deprivation from smoke inhalation outnumber fire deaths that result from burns. Awareness of smoke inhalation is critical on the fireground. (2005 National Fire Protection Agency Report)
